Museum of Modern Art, New York: Contemporary Architecture

The Museum of Modern Art: Architecture and Design Department

Contemporary Architecture Focus

The Museum of Modern Art is seeking to fill a curatorial position in its Architecture and Design Department.  The ideal candidate will bring a particular expertise and focus on contemporary architectural practice and discourse globally to the existing curatorial team.  From the outset, the world’s first curatorial department devoted to architecture and design was dedicated both to documenting the historical evolution of modern architecture, industrial design, and graphic design, and to creating an exhibition program presenting and interpreting important trends of the contemporary scene.  Today the collection offers an extensive overview of the development of modernism in architecture and in design objects from the Arts & Crafts movements of the end of the 19th century to the latest advances in digital fabrication and rapid manufacturing in architecture and design.  In addition to architectural models, drawings, and photographs, the Department’s holdings include the Mies van der Rohe Archive. The design collection comprises more than 3,000 objects, ranging from appliances, furniture, and tableware to tools, textiles, sports cars—and even a helicopter. The graphic design collection includes over 4,000 examples of typography, posters, and other combinations of text and image.

To complement the existing strengths of the curatorial staff, the Department seeks an individual who can be primarily responsible for contemporary architecture, taking responsibility for developing alone and in conjunction with colleagues, exhibitions, acquisitions, publications, public and educational programs, and patron development.  Rank and salary is dependent on qualifications and prior experience, but a master’s degree or higher is expected as is a background in architecture, architectural history, or design history.  Record of publication and prior exhibition or curatorial experience is also required.  An appointment will be made at the Assistant, Associate, or full Curator level.

Please submit resume, including the names of three references, and cover letter, to jobs@moma.org or to The Museum of Modern Art, Department of Human Resources, 11 W. 53rd Street, New York, NY 10019.
