DESCRIPTION:Our workshop "Graphing Genes, Cells, and Embryos" discusses dimensionality, pattern and scale in the life sciences and beyond (architecture and art). A focus will be on the fruitful relationship between architecture and biology. From the 19th century many biologists were inspired by architectural forms, and, vice versa, many architects were influenced by biological shapes.. For instance, in molecular biology and immunology scientists like Linus Pauling and John Kendrew collaborated with architects to represent visually their ideas of (molecular) structure. The Danish architect Jörn Utzorn was influenced by D'Arcy Thompson's classic On Growth and Form when designing the opera house in Sydney. In the 19th century the distinguished anatom and embryologist Wilhelm His discussed with Carl Culmann the elasticity of bones in regard of statics, or think of the roof of the Olympic Munich Stadium by Frei Otto.
