Iconography in Nineteenth Century Architectural Historical Publications
1 June 2007
Erasmusbuilding - Justus Lipsius Hall
Faculty of Arts
Blijde Inkomststraat 21, 8th Floor
B-3000 Leuven
In recent years architectural history writing has enjoyed increasing attention as the subject matter of scholarly study. The workshop aims to focus on one aspect in this field, the hidden meanings of pictures in 19th-century architectural historical publications, centred on the following themes and questions.
Which developments did reproduction techniques undergo, which are relevant to the translation of particular positions in architectural history between 1789 and 1914? How were formal aspects and meanings of representation influenced by certain notions, such as rationalism (analysis) and romanticism (synthesis)? What was the rhetorical character of the pictures considered from the author's perspective as well as within their own autonomy? What was the function of the picture in relation to the motivations, the public and the chosen publication categories of authors with a general historical interest in architecture? And finally, how did text and picture interact? To which degree did illustrations contribute to the text or interpret it (or vice versa), or did they simply affirm each other? Can we speak, in certain instances, of a 'national style'?
The speakers form an international group of outstanding researchers, who work on an interdisciplinary basis and who deal in their lecture with more than one of these aspects or the relationship between them.
