Call for Proposals: "Contested Terrains" - 23rd Annual Conference of the Society of Architectural Historians Australia and New Zealand / Freemantle, Western Australia, 30 September - 2 October 2006

SAHANZ calls for proposals for individual papers and session panels for its 2006 conference addressing the theme ‘Contested Terrains’.

‘Contested Terrains’ describe the diverse and competing array of perspectives that converge around any given historical subject of architecture. The theme builds on the complex interplay and tensions that derive from the varied range of histories, theories, meanings and values surrounding our sense and understanding of architectural and urban form. It accommodates the controversial, problematic, volatile, contradictory and ambiguous and asks what this implies for the history of architecture and related fields. In what ways, furthermore, can we begin to think, see and frame architecture and urban space as particular sites of contestation, as terrains inhabited and overlaid by the conflicting imperatives of history and theory or demands of academy, profession and community? To what degree should we celebrate or limit the conflict of such narratives and counter-realities? And does the idea of ‘Contested Terrains’ represent an opportunity or threat to our comprehension of architecture’s identity, purpose and significance? ‘Contested Terrains’ pronounce on the profound and multiple collisions of narratives that impact on the way we historically experience, interpret and critically engage with architecture and the urban realm.

We invite both individual and panel session proposals from members and friends of SAHANZ to consider in the broadest terms ‘Contested Terrains.’ All abstracts and the final papers will be subject to a double blind refereeing process. The Conference organizing committee will select panel session submissions as outlined below. Authors will need to submit accepted papers in full accordance with the timeline below. Other than approved session proposals, the conference organizing committee will group the delivery of individual papers into themes.

*Proposal Deadline:* 14 April 2006

*Submission Guidelines for Individual Papers:*
· The submission of proposals in a word document.
· On one page, include a succinct title for the paper and an abstract no longer than 300 words.
· On another page, indicate your name, institutional affiliation, full contact details and a brief biographic statement (40 words or less), possibly indicating details of two recent publications.

In the subject line of the email write 'ABSTRACT: paper title'

Name the Word document "the individual author’s family name_titleword"

Send abstracts to: SAHANZ06@exchange.curtin.edu.au <mailto:SAHANZ06@exchange.curtin.edu.au>

*Submission Guidelines for Session Panels:*

The opportunities for session panel proposals are invited to encourage research and practice initiatives and identify particular views of the conference theme ‘Contested Terrains’. The conference organizing committee will determine the suitability of any given panel proposal. However, each individual abstract and then full paper will be evaluated on its own merits according to the double blind refereeing process. Guidelines for session panel proposals require:

· The submission of proposals in a word document
· On one page, include a succinct title for the session and description of the initiative or view of ‘Contested Terrains’ no longer than 300 words
· On additional pages identify a minimum of 3 paper titles to comprise the session each with an abstract no longer than 300 words.
· Then, on final pages, list paper titles again, each followed by the respective author’s name, institutional affiliation, full contact details and a brief biographic statement (40 words or less), possibly indicating details of two recent publications. Identify the Session Chair by placing their paper title, name and details first.

In the subject line of the email write ‘SESSION: session title’
Name the Word document “the chair’s family name_session title word”

Send abstracts to: SAHANZ06@exchange.curtin.edu <mailto:SAHANZ06@exchange.curtin.edu>

*Timeline
