EAHN Tour 2007
Dear EAHN members,
Please find below the details concerning the second EAHN tour. This year the tour will take us to Sibiu (Romania), one of the 2007 Cultural European Capitals (www.sibiu.ro). The tour leader, Janos Gerle, architectural historian from Budapest, specialist in the architecture of the 19th and the 20th century, will take us to visit the city and its large surroundings, covering a rich architectural heritage, from the Middle Ages to the interwar years. It will be an opportunity to meet several scholars, specialists in the field, who will guide us. We are also going to meet our colleagues from the School of Architecture in Sibiu, which will be inaugurated in October 2007.
Would you like to join us, please let us know before the 3rd of June, 2007. Your inscription becomes effective by paying the cost of the tour, which is 290 euros (for more details see the description below).

ROMANIAN TOUR PART 1. HUNGARIAN AND GERMAN HERITAGE IN BETWEEN TARGU-MURES AND SIBIU
(18-23 September) A EAHN Tour, led by Janos Gerle
18. September Tuesday
arrival (with a flight from Vienna 10.40-13.25) in Sibiu and a transfer from Sibiu to Targu Mures (accomodation in the Bod Péter Diaconical Center or in hotels) possible common supper in the Center
19. September Wednesday
Forenoon: Art Nouveau in the town (Townhall, Cultural palace, walk to the villas of Wigand), the gothic church of the castle and Pálffy-house
lunch: reception in the Cultural palace, greetings of Zoltán Soós (director of the town museum) and Ilona Csortán (National Institute of Archhitectural Monuments, superintendent in the county Maros)
Atfernoon: vernacular architecture along the Nyárád river (Sinvasii, unitarian church from the 15.c. with frescoes; Maiad, church from the 13.c. and with a painted ceiling from the 18.c.; Bira church from the 14.c.)
Supper and accomodation in Targu Mures
20. September Thursday
Excursion by the Küküllő river (Iernut, late renaissance Rákóczi-castle; Szászbogács, middle age saxon fortified church with a fine wing-altar; Cetatea de Balta, late renaissance Haller-castle, church from the 13.c.; Sinmiclaus, a very special renaissance castle designed by its owner after his inspirations by Palladio, 17.c.; Ganesti, winecellar with tasting)

21. September
Sighisoara and surroundiing
Forenoon visit in the town (Hill-church, restoration honoured by Europa Nostra prize, gothic, middle-age dwelling houses (guided by Ferenc Mihály wood-restorer), Lunch in the middle-age Szarvas-house
Afternoon: Biertan, saxon fortified church, gothic; Richis, middleage church
Supper and accomodation is Sibiu
22. September
Forenoon: sightseeing tour in the town Sibiu (Holy Cross chapel, old townhall, Brukenthal museum etc) (guided by Hanna Derer)
Lunch: reception in the townhall, greeting by Szabolcs Guttmann, chief architect
Afternoon: excursion to the open-air Village Museum, near Sibiu (Dumbrava)
Supper and accomodation in Sibiu, finishing the tour, possible departure from Sibiu airport (to Vienna 14.30-1845 via Bucharest)
22. September
Voluntary walks in the town, departure from Sibiu (to Vienna 14.45-15.45)
23-25. September
possible participation at the INTBAU conference in Sibiu (more details at http://www.intbau.org/SibiuConferenceEN.htm)
PRACTIC DETAILS
The cost of the tour (290 euros) includes the bus trips, 5 warm meals and the EAHN fee.
The participants have to pay their travel to Sibiu and back, and their accomodation.
In Targu Mures the cheap place (which is a good place), the Bod Peter diacony costs 25 euro in a 1 bed room, 16 euro per person in a two bed room (with breakfast)
In a hotel it is more expensive:
Hotel Parc**: 1 bed 35 euro, 2 bed 25 per person
Hotel Continental***: 1 bed 70 euro, 2 bed 40 euro per person
Hotel Everest*** 1 bed 70 euro, 2 bed 40 euro per person (not in the centre)
The prices are similar in Sibiu in a hotels: reservation is of course urgent since Sibiu is a European Capital in 2007!
